Fr. Michael writes: The first reading today reminds us of the Ten Commandments. Many Catholics are quite happy to use, the old yardstick when examining their lives, namely, the Ten Commandments God gave to Moses. But we should remember that Christ gave us a new yardstick. If the old was good enough there would be no need of Christ. But the old was not good enough. Something new and better has happened. So it is, since the coming of Christ. Jesus tells us that we are to live in freedom of the children of God; that we must give Him first place in our lives; that we can call God ‘Abba’ Father; that we must be compassionate as our Heavenly Father is compassionate; that we should give to those who ask. The Commandments were meant to be a whole way of life for people. So too, with the new commandments of Jesus.3rd Sunday of Lent
